Students this week received a detailed introduction to the International Classification of Disease Clinical Modification Version 10 and how a patient's diagnosis correlates to a medical code for statistical tracking regionally, nationally and internationally to the Dept of Health and Human Services, the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization. A firm understanding of anatomy and physiology is necessary to successfully report the most specific medical code that identifies a condition.

Medical coders are required to stay abreast of current federal guidelines and regulations implemented by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Office of Inspector General (OIG), the American Medical Association and other governing entities. Changes in Healthcare are constant!
