I don’t normally answer 1 800 numbers, and if someone claims to be from a company, especially a health insurance provider, I always ask for a call back number so I can verify it first. Scammers can spoof caller IDs to look legit, and the call back number they give is almost never the real one.
Well… today I slipped!
I dialed the number they gave me before researching it. As soon as I realized I wasn’t following my own protocol, I told the person on the phone that I needed to verify the number. They quickly said, “It’s on the back of your insurance card.”
Spoiler: it wasn’t!
So I hung up and called my insurance company using the number from my online account (the real one!) and they confirmed they had not contacted me today for anything.
Just a reminder:
✔ Don’t trust caller ID
✔ Verify the number from an official source
✔ Don’t let anyone rush you
✔ Hang up if it feels off
Stay safe out there. These scam calls are getting sneaky! They pose as legit companies to ask you your personal information, id numbers, etc.
