How to trim black nails.
This depends on the length, but look under the nail for the ‘flesh/quick’ this is the area you have to avoid. As you cut off small amount at a time, look at the end of the nail. There will be a ‘bullseye’ as you get closer to the quick. This changes in a millimetres, so be careful. Once you see the darker middle you are very close, at this stage, use the clippers on an angle on each side to take the sharpness off a new nail down or better yet use a dremel or rotary tool with sanding bit to round off rough edges.
If you cut the quick’ use quick-stop, flour or corn starch to stop bleeding.
How often do nails need trimmed?
Depends on the dog, running/walking surface, activity level. But the more you do cut the nails, the shorter the quicks become. @ Castro Valley, California
