Today, we celebrated Vartanants, also known as the Feast of Saint Vartan, commemorates the Battle of Avarayr, which took place in 451 AD. This battle is a significant historical event for Armenians and is celebrated to honor the valor and sacrifice of Saint Vartan Mamikonian and his warriors in their fight against the Sassanid Persian Empire.

The core reason Armenians celebrate Vartanants is not just to remember a military confrontation but to honor the defense of their Christian faith. At the time, the Persian Empire sought to reassert Zoroastrianism as the state religion in Armenia, which had adopted Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD, becoming the first nation in the world to do so. Vartan Mamikonian led the Armenian nobility into battle to protect their right to practice Christianity freely.

Despite the Armenians being heavily outnumbered and ultimately losing the battle, their resistance led to a subsequent guerrilla war which eventually secured Armenians the right to maintain their Christian faith. The battle is seen as a symbol of the Christian faith and national identity of the Armenian people, illustrating their willingness to sacrifice their lives for their beliefs and freedom.

Vartanants is thus celebrated not just as a historical event, but as a testament to the Armenian spirit, faith, and their struggle for religious freedom and national sovereignty. It is observed with church services, cultural events, and commemorations that reflect on the significance of this battle in Armenian history and identity.
