Shabbat Shalom from CSP!
As we read Parshat Beha'alotecha, God commands Moses: "Make two silver trumpets... they shall serve you for summoning the congregation and for setting the camps in motion" (Numbers 10:2). Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, drawing on Rav Soloveitchik, notes that the trumpets united both the machaneh (camp united by shared fate) and the edah (community united by shared purpose) and the shared covenant between them makes them a unique nation. This week's Torah portion takes on added meaning through the discovery of the famous "Place of Trumpeting" stone at the foot of the Temple Mount, marking the very spot where the Levites likely stood to announce Shabbat and festivals. Beyond helping archaeologists identify the precise location of the Temple, the stone reminds us of the deeper purpose of the Temple Mount itself: a place where a collection of camps became a congregation, and a congregation became a nation. The sound of the trumpets echoed across Jerusalem, gathering the people not only physically, but spiritually, uniting them in covenant, purpose, and destiny.
