In 612 BC, the great Library of Ashurbanipal burned. Centuries later, Caliph al-Ma'mun of Baghdad decided to finish the job.
He built the House of Wisdom. It wasn't just a library.
It was a factory for saving civilization. Al-Ma'mun paid scholars their weight in gold to translate Greek philosophy, Persian astronomy, and Indian mathematics.
Every book was copied, studied, and debated. The library became the world's brain.
Then the Mongols arrived in 1258. They threw the books into the Tigris River.
Historians say the ink from the manuscripts darkened the water for months. More knowledge was destroyed in that one event than existed in all of Europe.
The House of Wisdom was a bridge between ancient learning and the modern world. Its loss is why we had to rediscover so much.
