𧬠PCOS has a new name, and the clinical implications matter.
π¬ After 14 years of research and 22,000+ survey responses, Polycystic O***y Syndrome is now officially Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).
π©Ί The previous nomenclature was misleading. Polycystic ovarian morphology is neither universally present nor diagnostically definitive. PMOS better reflects the underlying pathophysiology: a complex polyendocrine and metabolic disorder affecting 1 in 8 women worldwide.
π This is not solely a reproductive condition. PMOS presents across metabolic, neuropsychiatric, and dermatologic systems. Decades of diagnostic delay can be traced, in part, to a name that narrowed clinical focus.
π©ββοΈFor clinicians, this is a call to reassess screening criteria and close the gap on a condition that has long been underdiagnosed.
