EWB-USA NEU is committed to building a better world through community partnership and empowerment. For centuries, the black community in America has had the lower hand due to institutional racism passed down for generations. While these issues have been recently highlighted by the killing of George Floyd, they have been at play since the beginning of this country. Our organization has always been committed to standing up for human rights, and these rights are under attack for black Americans in this country. We are proud to stand with the black community fighting for true equality and we are committed to looking at our own organization in a new light - one that promotes diversity, fights for justice, and dismantles the white privilege overtures that have plagued this nation.

We are committed to not just solidarity, but concrete action. In the coming days, weeks, and months, EWB-USA NEU will stand with other Northeastern student groups to discuss and enact changes that Northeastern desperately needs to improve diversity within the College of Engineering. We are looking at our organization structure and messaging to evaluate its effectiveness for a diverse group of students, and we are looking into how we can empower not only our partner communities in Panama, Guatemala, and Uganda, but our own black communities in the Greater Boston area.

This movement is not about us, Northeastern, or EWB. It is about the millions of black Americans who have been pushed aside in the struggle for equality. This movement is not a political issue but a human rights issue. We stand with Black Lives Matter.
