“It was scary seeing those zeroes on a bill,” Aracely says of the medical bills she began receiving at the worst possible time.
The young mother just welcomed a second baby into her growing family when she learned her breast cancer had come back.
She started chemo postpartum, almost immediately after delivery.
Aracely and millions like her don’t choose to become sick. But when life happens and the unexpected becomes reality, no one should have to choose between life and debt.
Her two sons keep her going, but we’re fighting for Aracely, too. https://communitycatalyst.org/stories/between-life-and-debt-aracelys-story/

Rural hospital closures are driving more people to further distances to receive care. For the 2.3 million women living in maternity care deserts, this growing crisis is particularly dangerous.
Only 41% of available rural hospitals offer labor & delivery, according to research by the Center for Healthcare Quality & Reform. In 12 states, less than one-third do.
Just as expectant mothers need accessible care most, our healthcare system is failing them.🤰🏾
When decisions are made far away, care disappears close to home. But it doesn't have to be this way. https://pulse.ly/mm9lit89p9

Today’s Trump event on maternal health care comes at a time when the U.S. is facing a very real maternal health crisis. But we cannot have an honest conversation about solutions while ignoring the biggest drivers of harm.
Black women in America are still 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. That disparity is not accidental — it is the result of systemic inequities in health care access, treatment, and outcomes.
At the same time:
• Medicaid — which covers 4 in 10 births nationwide — is under threat from massive proposed cuts
• Families are struggling with the affordability of care
• Access to comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion care, continues to be attacked
Maternal health care must include racial equity, affordable coverage, and the freedom for people to make their own health care decisions.
Anything less avoids the reality families are facing every day.
