On Memorial Day, we offer our deep gratitude to all the men and women who have served our nation — and to those who made the greatest sacrifice with their lives.

The greatest way we can honor them is to cherish the values they died for: freedom, dignity, and the belief that every human being matters.

Their sacrifice reminds us of a truth at the heart of the Sun Poem:

Are you greater than the sun
that shines on everyone: Black,
Brown, Yellow, Red and White
the sun does not discriminate.

Those we honor today gave their lives so that these values — equality, unity, and shared humanity — could endure.
May we live in a way that reflects the light they protected, and ensure that each generation strives to be greater than the one before.

The Sun Poem was written in a personal journal in 1978 by Sara Ting a Chinese American. It was never meant to public.
