Took a walk over to the Keliher Rose Garden in the Fenway Thursday. There were lots of beautiful roses, but peak will probably be in the coming week. Like everywhere around us, the garden suffered heavy losses from the weather last winter. Over 300 rose bushes have been replaced, and many of the arbors are cut way back. But the garden was in tip top shape as they were preparing for the annual Garden Party fundraiser for the Parks department.

This looks to be a challenging year for landscaping!
First off, it's still too early to be planting much of anything outdoors. But in talking to some of our sources, it sounds like we should expect stock to be in short supply, and it's likely to cost more. Many of the trees and shrubs that would have shipped this spring were already sold last fall. Buyers are struggling to find supplies. Because of pandemic and workplace restrictions last year (like having enough staff and inability to work in close quarters), cuttings were not taken and young plants were not started to mature for sale this year. On top of all that, shipping costs have risen, and shortage of supplies may drive prices up.
That said, if you are planning more significant landscaping projects this year, it's a good idea to get your plans figured out sooner than later so you (or we) can try and grab the stock you need as soon as it is available.
If you need any help with your roofdeck, front gardens, patios, back yards or container plantings, please be in touch.
Happy Spring!

Erdman Design had the privilege of transforming this space for a very small outdoor wedding this past weekend. Best wishes to the wonderful couple!
