How are you compromising yourself in your career?

I’m reading a book on marketing and personal branding and the author states that before you can build a compelling personal brand you must identify all the ways you hide and hold yourself back because you are afraid of what other people think, looking bad, feeling like an impostor, etc.

I recognize my fear of looking bad and not feeling good enough holding me back in certain areas of my career.

I recognize the same issues with my clients who are afraid to go after what they really want.

While the fear feels real it is important to recognize it and build a strategy to help you move forward.

I find having an accountability partner/group helps me move forward despite my fears.

Nothing good comes from staying complacent because your scared of what might happen.

Find a way to move forward, take small steps, ask for help.

"Maybe this isn't for me."

Those were the terrifying yet honest words that came out of my client's mouth today.

He is a software programmer that doesn't want to be a programmer. In fact, he never really wanted to be one it was what his parents wanted for him.

But this was the breakthrough moment he needed.

He needed to admit that he was simply following his parent's wishes rather than his own.

Today he could look at his future as a blank canvas that he gets to paint.

"What would you want to do if you didn't have to be a programmer tomorrow", I asked him?

The answer was clear to him and it had been clear to him this whole time. He was just afraid to make a change because of social pressure.

But he is finally at a place where he knows he can't live for the opinions of others.

Caring what other people think is not a recipe for career success, especially if you don't even enjoy what you are doing.

What is the honest truth you need to admit to yourself about your career path?

What would you do if you didn't care what other people thought?

It is difficult to figure out what you want careerwise if you aren't being honest with yourself.

Give yourself permission to start listening to your own voice.
