A sold out calligraphy class at a bookstore? Honestly, a dream come true!
Teaching in a bookstore has been on my wishlist forever and Book Ends really made our first class together extra special. This beloved shop has been a staple of downtown Wi******er for over 40 years and the owners are so warm and welcoming. The whole night just felt magical.
I’m so grateful to everyone who joined us and made it such a fun night. We practiced pretty letters, laughed a lot, and everyone got to enjoy 10% off during a private shopping experience… I mean, can you think of a better night out?
Does this sound like your vibe? I’ll be back on Friday, May 1st for a special Mother’s Day themed class. In addition to a beginner’s calligraphy kit, attendees will also receive supplies to create their own cards for mom, or another special person in their lives!
Comment the name of a good book you’re reading to help give me inspiration for class and I hope to see you there!

2016. I almost didn’t post anything (blame my Gen X rebellious sensibility). So many good things happened that year but personally, it was also a significant year in my alopecia journey. While remembering that roller-coaster of a time, I realized it was also the year of one of my absolute favorite projects. So, let’s revisit the professional side of things.
In 2016 I was all about wedding invitations and celebrating 10 years of my small biz. I had taught myself graphic design and was obsessed with fonts, playing around with all the glyphs. The more letter variations, the better! I was even known to frankenstein some letters together (still do!).
This was also the year my sister-in-law got married and her iconic dress served as the inspiration for a whole wedding invitation suite I designed around it. I’m pretty sure my exact words to her were “just let me do what I do” and I took it from there.
The dress in question? That was all thanks to another sister-in-law. The perks of her being in the wedding dress industry, she was literally friends with the designer of said epic dress. There’s a whole story about her watching him sketch it on a napkin, I’ll let her fill in the details…
I mean, the DRESS! I was in love! Something about the white on white stripes, I was immediately obsessed. Yes, it fit in with the whole navy / stripes / preppy vibe of the wedding. But I just knew, her invitations needed a white on white stripe feature. And, since I couldn’t find what I wanted, you better believe I painstakingly hand-painted iridescent stripes onto matte white card stock for each and every invite to achieve what I was looking for!
It can be challenging as business owners to work with friends/family but I think that’s how I started to build my confidence as an artist. I felt comfortable working with people I knew well and who trusted me to just “do what I do”. Yeah, it wasn’t the most profitable business model but these projects also allowed me to learn new things. Like, what is the best way to paint stripes on 100+ pieces of 5 x 7 cardstock!
