June’s Pact
The earth cracks its knuckles,a dry-throated whisperbut we kneel anyway,pressing our palmsinto the dust’s hot scripture. Each seed a gamble:beans like emerald pendants,tomatoes swollen with tomorrow’s ruby,pepper's stubborn spirepiercing the sun’s tantrum. Sweat fallsliquid metronomesmarking time betweenwhat’s buriedand what insists on rising. The hose exhales silver,a fleeting truce.We know this dance:how roots fist downwardwhile the sky hoards its mercy. Still, we plant becausethe parched groundremembers how to sing.
