“Suck it Up” is Failing Men. And here’s Why.

It is time to drop the fake armor. The old-school “suck it up” mentality is failing men.

For Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, I am calling out the idea that true strength means suffering in silence. As a dad, athlete, coach, and friend, I’ve realized that choking down your feelings until you burn out is a liability. True strength takes the guts to admit when you are struggling. Let’s kill the stigma and be our brother’s keeper. Sometimes we need to physically dig into the grit in order to get throgh a challenge. But that’s not whta im talking about.

Life is an endurance event, and no one should have to run it alone. If you are ever struggling, if you need someone in your corner, or if you just need an ear—reach out to me for any matters, ever. My door is always open. We have each other’s backs.

Happy Global Running Day!
Today isn’t about splits, pacing strategies, or hitting a specific target heart rate zone. It’s about why we lace up the shoes in the first place.

Running evolved from a way to build an athletic engine into something much deeper. It became a testing ground for how I show up in the world. Every mile I log is a direct investment in the three pillars that define my life: training smarter on the pavement, racing stronger toward my goals, and living fuller alongside the people who matter most - no matter where in the world I am.

Ultimately, the grit and mental resilience built deep into those long miles aren’t just for me—they are for my family. Running gives me the clarity to be a better father, a sharper coach, and a stronger leader. It’s about setting an example for my kids, proving that we can handle hard things, and building the structural longevity to stay active with them for decades to come. I don’t just run to add years to my life; I run to add life to my years for the ones I love.

Are you building a massive cardiovascular engine but forgetting to build the chassis to support it? Most triathletes and marathon runners think strength training means high reps and light weights. But if you want to hold your form together when you’re deep into the pain cave, you need explosive, structural resilience.

By training the body to move heavy loads explosively, you develop massive hip extension for power on the bike, total-body core stability to maintain posture during late-stage miles, and the heavy-duty durability that prevents common overuse injuries.

True community isn’t born in the moments of comfort—it’s forged when we choose to stand side-by-side and suffer for something greater than ourselves.

Hitting the floor for this Memorial Day MURPH recap is about far more than logging a workout or checking a box on a long holiday weekend. This is about community solidarity and paying deep homage to those who gave everything to afford us the right to sweat, compete, and breathe free.

1 mile run
100 pull-ups
200 push-ups
300 squats
1 mile final run

When the weight vest heavy-loads your chest and the Florida heat redlines your heart rate, every single rep becomes a calculated reminder of our privileges. We don’t back down from the friction; we step forward into it as a collective tribe. We lean on each other’s energy, using the shared physical suffering to honor the fallen, test our mental resolve, and prove that we are capable of finding another gear when our minds beg us to stop. Tie your purpose to the person grinding next to you. Drop your head, lock in, and keep moving.

Are you stepping or have you stepped up to the bar this weekend? Drop a comment below with your experience or message me to share your own MURPH story. Let’s keep pushing the standard together.

“If it doesn’t challenge you, it cannot change you. But on Monday morning, the challenge isn’t about you at all.”

This Monday morning marks my 10th consecutive year stepping up to take on the MURPH challenge. Looking back at this collage spanning 9 years of sweat, torn hands, and heavy vests, it’s easy to focus on the physical numbers: a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and a final 1-mile run. But if you are doing this workout just to see your name on a leaderboard or to burn calories, you are completely missing the point.

We don’t do MURPH for a PR. We do it to remember the WHY.

This event is a solemn tribute to Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy and every single brave individual who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. When you’re wearing that 20-pound vest at rep 150 of the push-ups, your lungs are burning, and your mind is screaming for a way out, that physical discomfort is a choice. You have the privilege to stop. They didn’t. Shifting your perspective from ‘I have to do this’ to ‘I get to do this’ is where true transformation happens.

As a high-performance endurance coach, this is the exact foundation of building a Resilient Self. Through the Endurance Edge Roadmap, we use targeted physical challenges to forge an unbreakable lifestyle blueprint—one that teaches you to lead by example for your family, stay accountable to your tribe, and reject the cycle of average. If you are stepping up to the bar this Memorial Day, tie your purpose to something bigger than yourself.

READY TO ELIMINATE THE cycle OF AVERAGE? True growth requires systemic accountability. Comment below or send me a message right now to connect with our tribe and trigger your baseline Athlete Assessment.
