In my consultations this past week I met with an amazing duo.

This mother baby combo had all the things… the fanciest of nursing pillows ( it was seriously so nice! ), a top of the line ni**le shield, creams galore…. The point is, you name it, she had it!

This momma was committed and PREPARED!

Or so she thought…..

One thing babies are good at is showing us how little of all that fancy they actually need. With this case, we had too much going on for momma and baby to connect. Infants need the touch of their mother’s skin to feel at home, and that glorious nursing pillow was preventing just that.

We removed the pillow brought baby and mother skin to skin. THAT was our first win!! Secondly, we had a ni**le shield in place that wasn’t necessary. ( Happens ALL THE TIME) Mom and I worked together to learn proper latching and it worked! She was amazing!! It’s a magical moment when you see mother and baby GET IT!

Her shoulders fell from tension she’d been harboring, her brow lost its furrow, and pure joy swept across her face…

Y’all, it gives me all the feels every single time!

It’s the small things you guys….the connection, the love, the patience with yourself and your baby.

Moral of the story: You don’t need all the fancy to be a successful breastfeeder.
