They don’t play

It’s not real until it’s on the ‘gram. Two months ago today, I went to pick up this little one in Alabama. Hayley has been keeping me busy since then. She’s smart and agile, determined and sneaky, loving and very snuggly. It was so hard to lose Kiri but she’s been a balm for a sore heart. She finds love wherever she goes and has made us all happier since her arrival. Couldn’t have asked for a more worthy successor.

There’s a hole in my heart just this shape tonight. This afternoon I held this tiny tail-wagging force of nature while her heart slowly stopped beating. She was my shadow, my side kick, the creature on earth who was most excited to see me and the organizing principle of every day for the last (nearly) two years. To say I’ll miss her understates the feeling by a factor of ten. She was willful, playful, loved every person and dog she ever met, and her spirit shined from her eyes through the tip of her tail. Godspeed my love. I wish my chapter in your life could have been longer, but I know it was a good one. ❤️
