Los satélites GPS, son esenciales para la navegación de nuestros teléfonos y automóviles y a su vez ofrecen poderosas herramientas para estudiar la superficie de la Tierra. Las señales que emiten se reflejan en el suelo, como un espejo, y regresan al espacio. Al capturar estas señales reflejadas con pequeños satélites, podemos mapear y monitorear los cambios en la superficie de la Tierra. La profesora Cynthia Gerlein-Safdi utiliza esta tecnología para rastrear inundaciones y ríos a nivel mundial. En su charla, explorará cómo una nueva generación de satélites está mejorando simultáneamente la cartografía del agua, las predicciones climáticas y los esfuerzos humanitarios.

GPS satellites, which are essential for navigating our phones and cars, also offer powerful tools for studying Earth’s surface. The signals they emit reflect off the ground, much like a mirror, and return to space. By capturing these reflected signals with small satellites, we can map and monitor changes in Earth’s surface. Prof. Cynthia Gerlein-Safdi utilizes this technology to track floods and rivers globally. In her talk, she will explore how a new generation of satellites is improving water mapping, climate predictions, and humanitarian efforts simultaneously.

Save the dates for all of Caminos de la Ciencia's spring events, taking place at César E. Chávez Branch in Fruitvale and starting on February 25.

At each event, scientists from UC Berkeley will lead conversations entirely in Spanish on topics ranging from microbes to poison frogs, to using GPS to study hydrology.

As a reminder, Caminos de la Ciencia events now have hands-on activities developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science. We encourage families and children to attend! As usual, food will be provided.

As usual, Caminos de la Ciencias are at the César E. Chávez Branch of the Oakland Public Library on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 5:30–7:30 PM (PT). July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded, and temperatures stayed high for an entire year. To tackle this climate crisis, new technologies, like synthetic biology and artificial intelligence, offer promising solutions by helping us shift away from our reliance on fossil fuels. Hector Garcia Martin, a physicist, will share how his lab is using advanced technologies to make new solutions more predictable, reliable, and effective. His goal is to increase the use of renewable resources and build a more sustainable economy.

Running out of books to get you through ? We're dropping specialized booklists to give you some ideas about what to read next.

And is more than just books! We have hands-on children's programming to keep the kiddos busy learning until school is back in session. From scientific adventures and magic shows to arts and crafts.

We're particularly excited about a teen program for aspiring photographers (more details coming soon!) but other coming up teen programming includes painting tiny art, learning to cook healthy recipes, Super Smash Bros tournaments, & a turf dancing workshop.

Adults can get assistance for their small businesses at various library branches, can attend a science lecture given entirely in Spanish that's facilitated by Science at Cal - UC Berkeley , and enjoy an enriching conversation between the author of The Nightmare Box & Other Stories and the host of the East Bay Yesterday podcast.
