The first session was a great success!

Our summer camp's first week focused on the Dragon Boat Festival. Students investigated the festival's traditions and history, engaging in exciting dragon boat races and playing the traditional "Five Poisonous Creatures Throwing" game. They learned festival rhymes, practiced writing related Chinese characters, and created themed crafts. A highlight was makingβ€”and enjoyingβ€”zongzi (rice dumplings). Students also naturally expanded their vocabulary, including food names, and practiced Chinese self-introductions.

Did you know?

In Mandarin, the tone used when pronouncing a syllable can change its meaning entirely. For example, the syllable "ma" can mean:

mā (妈) – mother

mΓ‘ (ιΊ») – h**p

mǎ (马) – horse

mΓ  (ιͺ‚) – to scold

This tonal aspect makes Mandarin both challenging and intriguing to learn

Instead of changing the verb, speakers use context words like "yesterday" (昨倩) or "already" (已经) to show time. That means "eat" (吃) stays the same whether it’s past, present, or future!
