St. Louis served as the expedition’s jumping-off point because it was the westernmost edge of American civilization and the strategic gateway to the uncharted West.
Situated just below the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, it was the perfect staging area to travel up the Missouri River into the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territory.
