As parents, our words have incredible power over our children’s self-esteem and confidence. Here are five statements you should consider ditching to nurture a happier, more confident child:

1️. “You always...” or “You never...”: Avoid labeling behaviors. Instead, focus on specific actions and encourage positive changes. Try: I notice that sometimes…..

2️. “I don’t understand why.”: Encourage curiosity and open communication. Show interest in your child’s perspective to foster understanding. Try: I know this happens sometimes and it’s hard for you. Can you tell me more about it?

3️. “You should be fine.”: Validate your child’s emotions and provide support. Offer reassurance and help them navigate challenges with empathy. Try: This feels really hard for you. I understand.

4. “Stop crying, it’s not a big deal.”: Validate emotions. Help your child understand and manage their feelings constructively. Try: This is really making you upset. How can we work together to make this better?

5. “Because I said so.”: Explain your reasoning and encourage dialogue. Respectful communication fosters mutual understanding. Try: Please put your lunchbox on the counter before you go outside to play. It’s important to take care of our things.
