Here are some before and after pictures of a breaker panel I recently replaced. I was called for a second opinion because the customer was told that there were signs of burning on the bus bar(where the breakers connect and draw power from.) This was a larger all trades service company that had said it. The mistrust from the customer developed as a result of them being on a maintenance plan and this company having put in the surge protector and done at least one maintenance visit and not said anything prior. The customer was provided with a very large quote to replace this breaker panel. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 5K. To make it all worse, when asked why the burning wasn’t noticed before they gave an answer that did not instill any level of confidence in the customer.
The point of all this is that I replaced this panel for around $2000. As for the burning on the original I wasnt sure if it was burning or corrosion. My opinion was that it was a very good preventative measure to change it. This panel took me two hours to change and about 2 hours worth of driving and getting material. I’ve done panel/service changes that were worth $5000, but this was not one of them. It also made it easy that there was a main disconnect at the meter/main pedestal at the street and it was in an area that did not require permit.
