The Netherlands has created a new way of living on water with a village called Schoonschip. It’s a community of 46 homes spread across 30 floating platforms on an Amsterdam canal. These platforms are real “arks”.
Schoonschip isn’t just a neighborhood on water. It’s a project started by locals who wanted to make sustainable living possible. In 2022, it was named “the most sustainable floating neighborhood in Europe”.
The Dutch have always had a special connection with water, but this takes it further. Schoonschip brings together tradition and innovation, making the line between land and water almost disappear. There’s even a community space where residents can meet and share ideas.
Living like this follows the principles of the circular economy. The future of housing might already be here.
