Gold on red. Gold on blue.
Two small panels, same language, different weather.

One burns. One broods.

I’m always chasing that tension:
ornament and structure, control and movement, silence and proclamation.

Sometimes a letter is not just a letter.
Sometimes it’s a little cathedral with sharp edges.

A mark is never just a mark.

Here, the initials R G become a signum—part monogram, part seal, part small act of defiance against the age of disposable everything.

This is Signum Roberti: a personal device shaped by calligraphy, manuscript culture, and the old instinct to make identity visible through form.

Threshold of Heat

2026
Acrylic on canvas, matte varnish
12 x 12 x 5/8 in.

This piece is built around the idea of passage—of standing at the edge of something charged, radiant, and not entirely knowable. Layered geometric forms create an architectural space that feels both constructed and atmospheric, as if heat itself has taken on structure.

Deep browns, ember reds, and burnt oranges hold the composition in tension, while a vertical field of yellow opens like a flare, a signal, or a doorway. I wanted the painting to feel inward and luminous at the same time: severe in its geometry, but alive in its color.

Small in scale, but not shy. This one carries its own weather.

DM for availability.

I finished my Maestà...an image intended to inspire contemplation...which is convenient, because it required an eternity to paint!

Medieval artists: I owe you an apology.

Egg tempera painters: I owe you a fruit basket and possibly a pension.

Anyway—gold ground, blue drapery, solemn faces, and the kind of patience I usually reserve for DMV lines and weather forecasts.
