“Mantis”, oils alla prima 11x14 wood panel. Available.
This is an idea I’ve had on my mind for years. Finally I got to paint it and I’m very happy with result. One thing about oil paintings is that photographs can never do justice to the real thing, specially when you have dark colors with subtle changes in them such as the background.
I added subtle strands of white hair. White hair is so beautiful and it represents wisdom. In a culture where people are afraid to age and afraid of death is an act of rebellion to age naturally and to show it.
The word “mantis” comes from the Greek language, and its meaning is “prophet” or “seer.” It is also related to the word “menos” which means, “spirit” and “passion.” Therefore, the praying mantis is often seen as a symbol of someone with clairvoyant abilities as well as someone who is a master at meditation.

“Country Goth”, oils 18x24 oil primed linen. Available.
Capturing the essence of a moment is an art in itself. Showing the reference material alongside the finished artwork unveils the intricate process of observation and interpretation.
In this piece, I aimed to encapsulate the warmth of a sun setting in the Texas hill country, playing with its subtle tones and dancing light. Since diving into wet-on-wet painting, my goal has been to mirror the world as I see it—realistic yet inspired with the brushstrokes of perception.
From close up, it might seem chaotic—a symphony of colors playing their own tune. But step back, and you’ll witness harmony emerge, each hue contributing to a visual masterpiece.
Mixing colors isn’t just about pigments—it’s about orchestrating them into a particular key. While once overwhelmed by color theory, studying it in depth transformed my artistic vision. I am learning more and more about color everyday…and I make lots of mistakes which helps me learn more faster :)
Art enriches life, and inspiration fuels creativity. This painting is just a glimpse into my ongoing series, “Country Goth.” Stay tuned for more glimpses into this vibrant world.
