Most pet retailers are tracking the wrong thing.
They look at website traffic and clicks. They feel good when impressions go up. They tell their agency "we want more traffic" — and most agencies happily deliver.
At Wyne Technologies, here's what we see when we audit a new client's tracking setup:
— Google Tag Manager firing on every "Call Now" button click, but no integration with the actual phone system to confirm the call connected
— No tracking on call duration (a 4-second hangup counted the same as a 7-minute booking conversation)
— Form submissions firing as conversions even when the form was abandoned mid-fill
— Heatmaps either not installed or never reviewed
— Bounce rate measured but never tied to the pages actually losing the customer
This is how a pet retailer ends up reporting "200 conversions this month" while the actual phone — the one that rings when a real human wants a real puppy — rang 14 times.
The gap between "tracked conversions" and "actual sales conversations" is where most agencies hide. And it's where most owners get robbed.
Real attribution looks different:
— Click-to-call tracking that confirms the call was answered and how long it lasted
— Form submission tracking that fires on completion, not on field-touch
— Heatmaps reviewed monthly to identify the page sections that lose people
— Time-on-page tied to which content actually moves buyers down the funnel
— Customer journey visualization showing the path from first ad click to closed sale
Most pet store owners we talk to have never seen this level of attribution because their previous agency never built it.
If your reports show "everything is up" but your weekly revenue isn't moving — your tracking is lying to you. Or more accurately, your tracking is telling the truth about clicks. It's just not telling the truth about sales.
