“Running with the big dogs” means keeping up with the toughest, most capable, or most experienced people in the room. The “porch” is where you hang back if you’re not quite ready for that pace.

It’s not always an insult—it can also be motivation. Get better, get stronger, and one day you’ll be running with the big dogs too.

On March 2, 1836, Texas declared independence from Mexico.

The US recognized Texas’ independence, and on September 5, 1836, Sam Houston became the President of the Republic of Texas. Texas had one decade as an independent republic before joining the US, and is the only state to enter the United States by treaty instead of territorial annexation.

President John Tyler signed the annexation bill on December 29, 1845. And on Feb 19, 1846, the US annexes Texas, to become the 28th state.

If someone’s “in high cotton” or “high on the hog," it means they’re doing well and living a comfortable lifestyle.
“High cotton” comes from farming days, when a great cotton crop meant excellent money.
“High on the hog” refers to eating the best cuts of meat reserved for those who could afford it.
Whether it’s crops or pork, both sayings mean one thing: life’s treating you real good.

“She's as ugly as homemade sin” is a classic Texan saying that’s all about exaggeration. It doesn’t literally have anything to do with sin—it just means someone is really unattractive. Like a lot of Southern expressions, it’s less about being mean and more about painting a vivid, memorable picture.
