My son, the history major has been immersed and absorbed by the writing of Robert Caro, especially the biography of Robert Moses “The Power Broker”. I was reminded that my father had a historic photograph of Robert Moses and Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia at the groundbreaking of the East River/FDR drive in NYC circa 1935. Moses was the most powerful and controversial unelected official in NY politics responsible for urban projects that remade the city and NY state. My grandfather Gus Wittmayer captured the photo. My father Bob was 11 years old at the time. He carried the view camera and film holders from our studio on Rivington Street to the assignment just as I did for him and my son has done for me. Grandfather, father, son and great grandson. 4 generations of Wittmayer Photographers.
