When , the first Black Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, retired in 1991 after 24 years on the bench, he expressed deep concern about who would succeed him.

His replacement, Clarence Thomas, has since taken a judicial approach that differed sharply from Marshall's views on civil rights, voting rights, affirmative action, and equal protection under the law.
