Even though flying hot air balloons is mostly regarded as a fun recreational activity, they actually played an important role during the Civil War, acting reconnaissance tool for spotting enemy movements and artillery.

The balloons could rise to thousands of feet and then see far in the distance. This helped provide information, giving advantage to those that used them.

The balloonists provided intel using the either a telegraph or special signal flags. People do not know how vital this was in the Union’s efforts of winning battles during the war.
