in 1885, former President Ulysses S. Grant died. Known mostly for his role in defeating the Confederacy during the Civil War, Grant was a decorated Union General who was only the second to hold the title of Lieutenant General (George Washington was the first). He was elected President in 1868 and again in 1872. He supported Civil Rights and pressed for an equitable Reconstruction of the South. He was the first President to tour the world (Europe, Egypt, Russia, India, among other countries), traveling as a defacto ambassador from 1877-1879. He returned to the US in debt after poor investment decisions and wrote his personal memoir (finishing only days before he died) as a way to provide for his wife upon his death from throat cancer. Julia received the modern equilivant of $13 million in royalties. He was buried in Riverside Park in Upper Manhattan, known now as the General Grant National Memorial. He is remembered by historians for his active role in suppressing the Ku Klux Klan and supporting the rights of African Americans.
