Plant growth and development are controlled by plant hormones . There are 5 main plant hormones that coordinate plant growth and development. We will discuss primarily about two kinds which are Cytokinins and Gibberellins. Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) based on these two types are used most in Apple cultivation. The other types we will focus on future post.

Cytokinins work on cell division thus promoting growth and Gibberellins work on cell elongation

Gibberellins (GA) is a group of hormones that is largely responsible for stem elongation and growth of shoots. There are over 135 known naturally occurring GAs. Each plant species has just a few GAs that are particular to that plant. GA4 and GA7 are dominant GAs in apple. GA7 is particularly inhibitory in apple.

Cytokinins:
* Promote cell division (cytokinesis)
* Ensure roots and shoots grow at equal rates
* Promotes secondary growth and help to control the rate of branching by a plant
* Cytokinins are also involved in stimulating the growth of fruit
* Fruit Elongation

Gibberellins:
* Triggers germination in dormant seeds (initiates plant growth)
* Stem elongation by promoting cell elongation and cell division
* GA inhibits flower bud formation in tree fruit
* Fruit Elongation
* Improve Fruit Finish
