A client recently told me she was advised that she needs to perform at the level she's aspiring to. And honestly? She’s not wrong.

The real question is: How do you actually accomplish that without blurring the lines and burning yourself out?

Most high-achieving women hear the advice to 'operate at the next level' and immediately translate it into: I need to do my current job perfectly, plus take on 50% of the next role’s workload and everything else in between.

So, you become the ultimate fixer. The reliable one. The one who says yes to every extra project, every tight deadline, and every low-value administrative task because you think it proves you can handle more.

But doing more work isn't next-level performance. That's just over-functioning.

When you spend all your time keeping your head down and grinding in the trenches, you become too indispensable right where you are for leadership to ever move you to the strategy room.

Performing at the next level doesn't mean volume; it means positioning. It’ means shifting your focus from day-to-day ex*****on to strategic impact, and changing how you communicate your value.

It is entirely possible to achieve excellence without exhaustion. But to get there, you have to stop performing for approval and start positioning for advancement.

Have you ever fallen into the trap of trying to prove you're ready for a promotion by simply taking on more grunt work?
