Custom Sewing Cabinets

This little beauty just left for sunny California. The Princess Cabinet which features drop leaves instead of the flip out tops. This is for smaller spaces when there is not enough wall space to open flip out tops - you can still raise the machine to work on small projects and raise a drop leaf when you need it. Finished using English Chestnut stain color.

Almost everything you need to know about Custom Sewing Cabinets and the customizing of your sewing cabinet.

Let’s start with what most companies won’t tell you when looking at their cabinet.

*They probably won’t tell you it is made with particle board, which is the cheapest material available. But you may already know that or have figured that out on your own.

*They won’t tell you that the screws that hold it together will never hold very well for a long period of time, or the wheels that push up into the edge of a particle board side will likely break out the first time that wheel bumps anything solid. You may also figure that one out as you are assembling it, which you will likely have to do.

*They won’t explain why the knee space must be at least seven inches wider than your machine. If your machine fits in the cutout of the cabinet top – one might assume it will work. But then you will realize when you lower your machine to sew in the flatbed position, that you can’t get in front of the needle. This would be because the knee space is not wide enough, and you can’t move far enough to the left.

*They won’t tell you about Electric Lifts. They use the electric lift to sell a cheap cabinet. Electric lifts are not all created equal. I did not use electric lifts for many years because of the way they were designed and built. Many on the market are designed to have the travel guides mounted on each side of the knee space instead of all of the mechanism being made as one piece. These would be very difficult to remove and replace in the event of a problem. They would almost certainly require a technician to make the swap. The new design that we are using are built as one unit, much like the hydraulic lifts that we have used for many years. One unit that can be removed with a Phillips head screwdriver and easily replaced. This way - if you ever had a problem with your lift - we would send you a new one and you could easily swap them out and send the old one back to us. Very simple...

Designing Your Cabinet

We use wood… Every piece is glued and nailed. It will last a lifetime. There is no particle or pressed wood anywhere in my cabinets. There is no assembly. Your cabinet is completely assembled, you lift it off the pallet, roll it in the house – set your machine in it – and sew.
The design - I start with your machine, and make sure the knee space is wide enough. If you are looking at a standard cabinet, like the Quilter – I have already designed those cabinets with a wide enough knee space to accommodate most machines. But I will still check to make certain that your machine will work fine. If not – we will customize it.
Cabinet Features:
You can decide what features you would like in your cabinet like a drop leaf on the back and/or a drop leaf on one side or both. You can also add other features and which side of the knee space you want your features. I have built cabinets with drawers on both sides, some with threadwalls on both sides, and every combination imaginable.

There is approximately 25 inches of vertical space for drawers. You can divide that up into how many drawers you want. Just make sure the total depth of your drawers equals 25 inches. Example – you could have 3 drawers that are 3 inches deep , 2 drawers that are 4 inches deep, and the bottom drawer that is 8 inches deep. (3+3+3+4+4+8= 25)
The standard drawer width on the Quilter cabinets is 14 ½” on the drawer inside. You can customize that as well, making them wider or narrower.
Ordering Your Cabinet:
Customizing your cabinet never changes the price much at all, if any. Don’t make do with a cheap melamine table. Get the cabinet you want.
