"God, save our gracious Queen..."

even as I recognize
the fraught nature of our process
for head of state,
a constitutional monarchy,
with remnants of an empire past
enwrapped with our colonial present,
I give thanks for the woman
who has lived that role -
not only for my entire lifetime,
but almost two decades before that.

I give thanks for her calm presence
in times with the world has been filled
with chaos,
her measured words in her Christmas message,
as we sat, listening to the radio,
then watching on the television,
and finally, livestreamed on the internet.

In this world where the shape of change
is ever a constant,
her face was one of touchstones,
her image, though changing,
showed eyes that looked at a world
through grace and strength.

And so I give thanks, today,
for the life of Queen Elizabeth II,
and pray that she rest gently
in your love, God of all creation.

May her family, and all who grieve,
be held in the comfort of your presence,
and may our memories of her
be ones that push us to positive change,
be ones that call us to faithful grace,
be ones that lead us to a more noble future,.
for all your creatures,
great and small.

In Christ's name,
in the Creator's love,
in the movement of the Holy Spirit,
I ask these things.
