Nile Basin Initiative

Congratulations on the Nile Basin riparian countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda! Here is full Statement Issued on 13 October 2024.

The NBI has undertaken a study tour to ZRA and ZAMCOM, two basin organizations based in Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively, to strengthen cross-border cooperation and learn from the best practices of these two institutions in water resource management.
This Experimental Tour s will enable the establishment of inter-regional cooperation between the NBI and ZRA and ZAMCOM, and above all, build capacity between the three institutions in the governance of their respective basins.

The Final day for the Regional Expert Working Group on Hydrology(REWG) in Munyonyo Kampala was officially Closed by the Deputy Executive Director Dr. Michael Kizza on behalf of NBI Executive Director. He expressed his gratitude to GIZ for their continued support.
The main conclusions as challenges to address were :
1. Operation and maintenance of Regional Hydrological System
2. Development of Hydrological Information Products
3. Regular engagement on seasonal hydrological forecast for Nile countries.

Honorable Sam Cheptoris, the Chairperson of Nile Council of Ministers (Nile-COM) and Minister of Water and Environment of the Republic of Uganda held a meeting with Ms. Birgit Pickle, the Director General for Africa at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). This important meeting was aimed at strengthening the long term cooperation between German government and NBI and discussing areas of future collaboration. The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of Uganda in Germany, the Executive Director of Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and Senior staff Members from NBI, and BMZ.
