The United States has launched “Operation Southern Spear,” a large-scale military initiative in the Caribbean and Latin America, officially aimed at combating drug trafficking. However, major global outlets argue it’s a strategic move to increase pressure on Nicolás Maduro’s government in Venezuela.
Led by U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), the operation includes naval fleets, submarines, and drones, and has already conducted over 50 strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels—though Washington has offered little evidence, fueling international skepticism.
France and the UK criticized the unilateral action, warning it could escalate tensions in the region and revive Cold War dynamics. Analysts suggest the operation is more about curbing Russian-Venezuelan influence and reasserting U.S. dominance in Latin America than fighting drugs.
In essence, “Southern Spear” may mark the most aggressive U.S. military move in the region since the 1989 invasion of Panama—not a war on drugs, but a geopolitical campaign for control.

Fierce battles are raging in El Fasher, the last stronghold of the Sudanese Armed Forces in the Darfur region,
as the city faces repeated attacks from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have surrounded it from five directions.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that between 2,500 and 3,000 people fled the city in just one day,
amid dire humanitarian conditions caused by blocked supplies and the prevention of aid deliveries.
Popular resistance fighters, volunteers fighting alongside the army, are defending the city,
while the militia continues to spread claims of “seizing” military positions,
even as local sources confirm that El Fasher remains steadfast.
The United Nations estimates that 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children,
are still trapped inside the besieged city, facing the threat of famine and disease.
Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF militia have been locked in a war that multiple regional and international mediations have failed to end, amid widespread civilian suffering.
According to UN and local reports, around 20,000 people have been killed and more than 15 million displaced as refugees or internally displaced persons,
while a study by U.S. universities estimated the death toll at around 130,000 people.
