Some Goods Spoil as Myitkyina-Mandalay Highway Remains Closed for Extended Period

Pajau Media
July 9, 2026

Some fresh produce and perishable goods have spoiled after cargo trucks were stranded for an extended period along the Myitkyina-Mandalay highway, causing financial losses for traders, according to truck drivers.

Fighting between the Myanmar military and resistance forces has been taking place along the road connecting Mandalay and Kachin State. As a result, cargo trucks traveling toward Mandalay have been stranded at the Katha-Naba junction since June 30, according to sources.

In addition, the Nant Hsai-Mae Zar and Indaw bypass routes have also been closed, leaving hundreds of vehicles traveling in both directions stranded for more than 10 days.

"Some have been stuck for around 15 days. All the goods have gone bad. Fish, fresh produce, seafood everything has spoiled. They are selling whatever they can at discounted prices in nearby villages, but they are still suffering losses," a truck driver said.

Some traders have now been stranded for so long that their goods have started to rot and emit foul odors. As the road closure continues, obtaining food has also become increasingly difficult for both truck drivers and passengers, according to sources.

In addition to the closure of the Myitkyina-Mandalay Union Highway, the Kan Paik Ti road, another vital transport route for Kachin State, has also been damaged by landslides. As a result, commodity prices in Kachin State are expected to rise further.

Myanmar Military Conducting Military Operations Across Kachin Region

Pajau Media
July 9, 2026

The Myanmar military is carrying out daily military operations across Kachin State, with tensions escalating on several fronts where clashes between the two sides continue, according to sources.

It is reported that the military has been conducting operations in areas covering six of the KIA's 11 brigades. These activities include military offensives, recruitment of local residents by pro-military militia groups, and attacks using artillery and drones.

In KIA Brigade 1 territory, covering the Putao and Hkawng Lang Hpu areas, pro-military militia forces have been recruiting local civilians and collecting and transporting supplies to the front lines.

Meanwhile, in KIA Brigade 2 territory, Battalion 11 area, the Min Zay Thant militia group has also been conducting military activities.

In addition, the Myanmar military has been carrying out military operations in the territories of KIA Brigades 7, 8, and 9. In KIA Brigade 11 territory, in Shwegu Township, fighting between the two sides has also been intensifying on a daily basis.

The continued clashes in Shwegu Township, which have lasted for more than two months from early May through July, are reportedly linked to the military's attempts to reinforce its troops in Bhamaw by advancing through Shwegu.

On July 7, joint forces consisting of Infantry Battalion (LIB) 56, Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 602, and Light Infantry Battalions 378 and 416 under Light Infantry Division 88, which were stationed inside Shwegu town, launched an offensive with around 40 troops along Lam Hka village, Five way junction, and the monastery area. The KIA responded with defensive operations, resulting in intense fighting.

Pajau Media
July 9, 2026

Electricity from the KIO government's Buga-Mali main hydropower system, which had been suspended for many months due to fighting in Kachin State, has now been restored in Waimaw Township, according to local residents.

"Two large generators have already arrived at the Buga office in Waimaw. They also said the damaged power lines have been repaired," a local resident said.

Starting from July 3, large power generators and electricity transmission lines were reconnected to the main power substation in Waimaw, allowing electricity distribution to resume, according to sources.

During the fighting in Waimaw Township, Kachin State, the military's airstrikes damaged the main Buga power plant and its electricity transmission lines. As a result, electricity distribution had been temporarily suspended.

Meanwhile, technical restoration work is also underway in stages to enable electricity to be supplied again to the main Buga power substation in Myitkyina.

July 8, 2026

The military junta is reportedly intensifying the deployment of troops and stockpiling food supplies, weapons, and ammunition on the Hkawng Lang Hpu front in the Putao region, according to local sources.

Continuous clashes have been taking place in the area. At the same time, the junta has reportedly expanded its offensive by deploying hundreds of troops, forcibly recruiting soldiers, questioning civilians, checking national registration cards, and arresting and assaulting local residents. As a result, people are having to exercise extreme caution when traveling, sources said.

Daily clashes are also continuing along the Putao-Hkawng Lang Hpu-Lang Se front, where military tensions remain high between the two sides. According to our sources, the military is continuing to reinforce its forces and make preparations in the area.

Pajau Media
July 8, 2026

The Waimaw-Kan Pai Ti trade route, an important transportation corridor for Kachin State, became impassable to vehicles on July 7 due to heavy rainfall that damaged the road, according to drivers.

The road collapsed between Sadung town and Lajawng Village along the Waimaw-Kan Pai Ti road. Due to the severe damage, not only vehicles but also motorcycles are facing difficulties passing through the area, and even pedestrians have to travel with caution, sources said.

Because of the road collapse, cargo trucks traveling in both directions have been stranded. At present, motorcycles are still able to pass, but it is reported that it may take several days before cargo trucks can resume using the route.

Similarly, on the Waimaw-Chipwi road, a landslide caused by heavy rainfall has damaged the road near Shangao Village. According to local sources, if repairs are not carried out promptly, the damage could become even more severe.

Hundreds of Vehicles Stranded as Sections of the Mandalay-Myitkyina Route Remain Closed

Pajau Media
July 7, 2026

Several sections of the Mandalay-Myitkyina route have remained closed for about one week due to the ongoing conflict, according to travelers.

Since around June 29 through July 7, the Naba-Katha road and the Meza-Nant Thae-Indaw bypass route have remained closed, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.

In addition, after Myanmar's military junta regained control of Meza Village in Indaw Township, junta troops reportedly moved into monasteries in Meza San Pya Village and Nant Thae Village to establish military positions. Local residents have expressed concern that clashes between the two sides could intensify again.

As a result, residents from villages along the Indaw-Meza road, including Laypyin, Thiba, Nankin, Natmahok Gyi, Natmahok Kalay, Laynaung, Naung Moe, Thanbo, Nant Thae, Meza, and Aleik Seik, have begun fleeing to safer areas.

Military analysts say the junta has been reinforcing its troops and launching military offensives in areas along the Sagaing-Kachin border in an effort to gain full control of not only the Mandalay-Myitkyina highway but also the railway connecting the two cities.

Residents Report Disturbance as Gold Panning Takes Place on Stockpiled Sand and Gravel Areas

Pajau Media
July 6, 2026

Residents in Shatapru Ward, Myitkyina, Kachin State, report that gold panning and related activities are being carried out in areas where sand and gravel have been stockpiled, causing disturbances due to loud machine noise, according to a local resident.

It is reported that during the previous summer, sand and gravel from beneath the Bala Min Htin Bridge were transported using dump trucks and heavy machinery under the stated purpose of preventing flooding, and were then piled up in open land areas in Shatapru, Manhkring, and Njang Dung wards. Recently, these stockpiled materials have begun to be reprocessed for gold extraction.

The activity is taking place in a vacant area of Shatapru Ward (6), locally known as Chying Hkrang Nawng, where residents say loud machinery noise has been causing daily disturbance for about a month.

“From around 9 a.m. until about 5 p.m., the machine noise is constant. It’s very disturbing because the area is very close to residential houses. Near the Japan Bridge area, it is more acceptable because it is farther from homes,” said a Shatapru resident.

It is also reported that similar machine based gold panning activities are ongoing in other areas as well, causing not only noise disturbance but also damage to some urban roads due to heavy transport trucks carrying sand and gravel.
