All morality infact is coloured and modified by opportunism, even when its basic principles are kept sacred and held more or less intact. A thing that is a sin in one age becomes a virtue in the next.

. Griffin, a U.S. Infantry sergeant in 1944 while in France. One late summer's afternoon, he was in charge of patrol near Rennes. Everything seemed quiet as the patrol made its way along a narrow, dusty road. Suddenly, a figure appeared in the road just few yards ahead. The sergeant gasped in amazement; the figure ahead was an exact duplicate of him, even the strips of plaster on his chin. His double was waving his arms frantically, quite obviously alerting him to go back. Griffin and his patrol retreated, as they did so; a jeep roared past, going upvthe road. After a few seconds, the sound of spandau machine-gun was heard the jeep crushed off the road spilling all the occupants on the road; all dead. There was a hidden German machine gun nest up the road. If the patrol had continued, they would have wiped out.
Twenty years later, Griffin had another Doppelganger experience. In June, 1964, the family of four was on camping holiday in the Laurentians in Canada, the weather was fine but the wind was very gusty. As the family walked in a single file through the trees, the wind swayed the tree tops alarmingly. As they came to a clearing, it happened again. There stood same figure he had seen 20 years earlier. It looked just the way it had looked the first time: combat uniform, helmet, and the plaster. It was giving the message-go back! Griffin needed no second telling about-turned his family at the double. As he did, there came a loud cracking splintering of wood, a loud crash and a swirl of dust as a huge tree smashed into earth where Alex and family had been a few seconds earlier.
