General Salva Kiir Mayardit
Current Position:
• President of the Republic of South Sudan (Serving since July 9, 2011 — the day South Sudan gained independence)
• Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).
• Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) since 2005.
Previous Positions:
• First Vice President of Sudan (2005–2011) under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
Background:
• Born: 13 September 1951, in Akon, Gogrial (now in Warrap State), South Sudan.
• Ethnicity: Dinka.
• Military Career: Joined the Anya-Nya guerrilla movement in the late 1960s during the First Sudanese Civil War. Later became one of the founding members of the SPLA in 1983, under the leadership of Dr. John Garang de Mabior.
Rise to Leadership:
After the death of Dr. John Garang in a helicopter crash in 2005, Salva Kiir assumed leadership of the SPLM/A and became President of the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan under the peace agreement with Khartoum.
He later led South Sudan to independence in 2011, following a referendum where nearly 99% voted for secession from Sudan.
Leadership and Legacy:
• Widely credited with steering South Sudan to independence, making him the country’s founding president.
• Has presided over major challenges, including civil conflicts (2013–2018), nation-building efforts, and peace negotiations culminating in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) in 2018.
• Known for promoting national unity, peace, and stability under the SPLM’s vision.
Titles and Honors:
• Commonly referred to as H.E. (His Excellency) President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
• Also holds the military title of General (Gen.).
• Recognized across Africa as one of the continent’s long-serving liberation leaders
