I recently read your well-written article on social media, and I was deeply moved by your advocacy for the restoration of dignity and value through a rightful stance on dowry. Your voice stands out as one of the few advocating for young and beautiful African daughters, and I would like to express my full support for your campaign.

My late father, Hon. Bona Bak Nyang Kur, widely known as Bak-Madingdit, was firmly against the unnecessary rise in dowry beyond what is traditionally accepted in Jieng culture. He often cited the example that in Gogrial, the maximum dowry is 100 cows, from which 30 cows (Arueth) are deducted as traditional discounts. This leaves the groom’s family to distribute 70 cows among the bride’s family. He strongly believed that this structure preserved the cultural spirit of marriage and community unity.

However, I now hold reservations about dowry inflation in today’s context, not solely because of greed or pride, but because our cultural values are being diluted. Let us first fight against the enemies of our culture, and this inflation will naturally fade away. Our African traditions are slowly being wiped out, not by war or natural disaster, but by delusional cultures pushed through social media and television shows in the name of civilization.

The current generation has begun to mistake civilization for the abandonment of our cultural heritage. Traditional norms are now seen as backward or irrelevant, yet in truth, they are the pillars of our identity. Holding on to our roots gives us strength, direction, and a sense of belonging. Education should be seen as a complement to culture, not a replacement.

Today, we are told that to be “civilized” means to speak, dress, or live like Westerners. But true civilization should not ask us to bleach our identities. It should not ask us to forget our languages, mock our traditions, or reject the wisdom of our elders. Sadly, many young people are being made to feel ashamed of their heritage.

One painful example is the growing discomfort with our skin color. I have never seen white people bleach to become black, yet there are entire industries dedicated to making black people lighter. Why? Because those who once exploited us now use the media to manipulate our minds, to convince us that white is more beautiful, more successful, and more acceptable. They capitalize on our insecurities and profit from our desire to conform.

Alith, your advocacy sparked in me a renewed desire to call for the restoration and protection of our cultural identity. I believe we can work together to inspire our generation to see the value in who we are, not just in what we can become by imitating others.

Let us stand firm. African beauty, wisdom, and pride are rooted in our cultures. Abandoning them is like walking through life without a soul. Let us use education to elevate, not erase, who we are. Let civilization mean growth without forgetting our roots.
