When touching a refrigerator, an electric shock occurs; what causes it? An electric shock when touching a refrigerator (or any appliance) is a serious indication of an electrical fault. It primarily occurs due to an unintended path for electrical current to flow through the refrigerator's metallic body, and then through an individual, to the ground.

The most common causes are as follows:
1-Faulty Internal Wiring or Component Insulation Breakdown: Inside the refrigerator, a live (phase) wire, which carries electrical current, comes into contact with the metal casing or a metal component of the refrigerator. This could be due to damaged insulation, component failure, or a damaged power cord.
2-Lack of Proper Earthing/Grounding (or a Faulty Earth Connection): This is a crucial safety feature. The third prong on a refrigerator's plug (the round or U-shaped one) is the "earth" or "ground" pin. It's connected via a green or green-and-yellow wire to the metal casing of the refrigerator and to the ground wire in a home's electrical system. If there's no earth connection, if the earth connection is faulty, or if there's a faulty electrical outlet, a shock can occur.

How does the shock happen?
When a fault occurs that makes the refrigerator's metal body live, and an individual touches it while standing on the ground (or touching another earthed object like a water tap), the circuit is completed. The electrical current then flows from the live refrigerator body, through the individual's body, and into the ground, causing the electric shock.

Immediate Action: If an individual or anyone gets a shock from a refrigerator, immediately unplug it from the wall outlet if it's safe to do so. If not, turn off the circuit breaker that controls that outlet. Do not use the refrigerator again until it has been inspected and repaired by a qualified appliance technician, and a qualified electrician has checked the home's electrical wiring and grounding.
