Current Favorites for the 2025 Kopa Trophy
Lamine Yamal remains the overwhelming favorite to clinch the Kopa Trophy again. His breakout 2024–25 season—with Barcelona’s domestic success and his own standout impact—cements him at the top of most predictions.

Désiré Doué (PSG) is noted as one of the only other serious threats, but he trails well behind Yamal in most assessments.

Why Yamal Leads the Race
He’s the reigning 2024 Kopa Trophy winner, and it's uncommon—but not unheard-of—for a player to win back-to-back.

On the pitch, Yamal has been nothing short of sensational:

Key contributor in Barcelona’s La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa triumphs.

Internationally, he earned the UEFA Euro 2024 Young Player of the Tournament award.

Early History of Manchester United (1878–1945)

🔴 Origins as Newton Heath (1878–1902):
Manchester United was originally founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by workers from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) depot. The team wore green and gold kits and played against other railway companies in the early years.
By the 1890s, they had joined the Football League but struggled financially and faced relegation.

💔 Near Collapse and Name Change (1902):
In 1902, Newton Heath was drowning in debt and close to folding. A local brewery owner, John Henry Davies, invested money and saved the club.
As part of the revival, the club was renamed Manchester United on April 24, 1902, and they adopted their iconic red and white colors.

🏆 Rise Under Ernest Mangnall (1903–1912):
The appointment of manager Ernest Mangnall changed the club's fortunes. Under his leadership:

1908: United won their first First Division title.
1909: They lifted their first FA Cup.
1911: They won their second league title.
Mangnall was United’s first successful manager and helped shape the early identity of the club.

🏟️ Move to Old Trafford (1910):
United moved from Bank Street to their current home, Old Trafford, in 1910.
Nicknamed the "Theatre of Dreams," the stadium became a symbol of their ambition.
Their first match there was a 4–3 loss to Liverpool.

🌍 Impact of World Wars:

*World War I (1914–1918): Football was suspended, and many players served in the military.
Interwar Struggles (1920s–30s): United had inconsistent performances and financial troubles, even suffering relegation in the 1920s.
World War II (1939–1945): Football again halted; Old Trafford was bombed by the Germans in 1941, forcing the club to share Manchester City’s ground temporarily.

---

By the end of WWII, Manchester United was not yet a dominant force—but they had laid the groundwork. Their rebirth came post-war under Matt Busby, which would lead to the glory years ahead.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is in Lagos, Nigeria, meeting with local creatives and tech entrepreneurs as part of a historic trade mission across Africa. The visit aims to spotlight the growing cultural and economic connections between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, particularly in the fast-evolving tech and creative industries.

"This is the fastest-growing tech cluster in the world. London is the tech capital of Europe, Lagos is the tech capital of Africa," Khan said. "I’ve brought more than two dozen British companies in sustainability and tech to Lagos, not as patrons but as partners, so both our great cities can flourish and thrive."

The event brought together artists, designers, tech founders, and cultural leaders working at the crossroads of innovation and storytelling. Experts say the exchange between the two countries is rich in creativity and knowledge-sharing.

"There’s a lot we must learn from London," said Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Founding Partner at Future Africa. "From infrastructure and global talent to livability and regulation, especially on ethical AI, this collaboration is essential."

As Nigeria’s tech ecosystem, often called “Silicon Lagoon,” gains international attention, the country’s youthful population and booming fintech scene are driving innovation.

"We are here to build a bridge stronger than broadband in Victoria Island and faster than the Elizabeth Line," said Olatunbosun Alake, Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology.
