The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority Executive Director, James Baggie Bio, met with leaders of the Indigenous Transport Owners Association on April 7, 2026, in Freetown to strengthen efforts on road safety and vehicle compliance.
He stressed the need for roadworthy haulage vehicles, proper maintenance, and adherence to safety regulations, noting that faulty vehicles contribute significantly to road accidents. He also highlighted that Sierra Leone has ratified the African Road Safety Charter, aligning the country with broader road safety standards.
The SLRSA warned that enforcement and physical inspections of unroadworthy vehicles will soon begin.
ITOA Chairman Issa E. Sesay welcomed the initiative, expressed willingness to comply, but requested more time to engage members. SLRSA officials also emphasized new measures, including mandatory vehicle fitness checks and focus on critical components like brakes and tyres.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to improving road safety and ensuring safer vehicles nationwide.
