Stay Safe During Floods: Hazards to Watch Out For

Flooded areas pose serious health and safety risks, and it’s important to remain vigilant to avoid life-threatening dangers. The World Health Organization (WHO) advises the public to be cautious and take preventive measures when in or near a flooded area.

1. Drowning
Floodwaters can be deceptively deep and fast-moving. Even shallow water can sweep people away or cause drowning, especially children and the elderly.

2. Electrocution
Downed power lines or submerged electrical outlets present a high risk of electrocution. Avoid contact with water near electrical sources and report damaged lines immediately.

3. Water-borne Diseases
Floodwaters often carry harmful pathogens that can lead to diseases like cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid. Drinking contaminated water or poor sanitation can quickly lead to outbreaks.

4. Food-borne Diseases
Food that comes into contact with floodwater may become contaminated. It’s crucial to avoid eating spoiled or exposed food and to ensure proper food handling.

5. Vector-borne Diseases
Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of diseases like malaria and dengue fever. Use mosquito nets and repellents, and drain stagnant water where possible.

6. Snake Bites
Flooded areas may displace snakes and other wildlife, leading them into homes and shelters. Always check your surroundings carefully and wear protective footwear when walking in or near water.

By staying informed and cautious, you can reduce the risk of these hazards and protect yourself and your family during floods.
