The Government of Sierra Leone has declared a nationwide ban on Tramadol. Minister of Health, Austin Demby, said in line with the Pharmacy and Drugs Act, government has issued a ministerial directive with immediate effect, adding that only Tramadol 50 milligram capsules are permitted for oral use in Sierra Leone.
He said only Tramadol 50 milligrams per millimetre injections are permitted, and that these can be used only in recognised health facilities under professional supervision. βAny Tramadol above these limits is illegal. Any injectable Tramadol used outside of health facilities is illegal. Any falsified and unrecognised Tramadol product is illegal.β Minister Demby stated.
This approach according to the minister, removes the most abused product from circulation while preserving access for patients who genuinely need pain relief.
