SCN and NDLEA Explore Partnership to Combat Drug Abuse in Sierra Leone

On August 19, 2024, the Sustainable Communities Network (SCN), led by Founder and CEO Dr. Columba Blango, visited the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) headquarters in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to discuss a potential partnership aimed at combating drug and substance abuse across the country.

During the visit, Dr. Blango outlined SCN’s ongoing efforts to empower young people through free computer literacy courses, which could serve as a post-rehabilitation resource for former drug addicts. He emphasized the importance of community involvement and the need for a decentralized approach to addressing drug abuse, particularly in areas heavily affected by drugs.

Chief Andrew Jaiah Kaikai, Executive Director of NDLEA, welcomed the collaboration, recognizing the potential impact of SCN's initiatives on the fight against drug abuse. He noted the challenges the agency faces, including underfunding, and expressed optimism that community involvement would yield positive results.

The meeting concluded with both organizations agreeing to establish a structure for partnership, with key contacts appointed for further collaboration.

It all starts at a young age...

Photos from Experience Voice's post 26/04/2024

My journey as a student and a waitress has been nothing short of a challenge. As I strive to pay my fees at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Sierra Leone and support my family, I find myself juggling multiple responsibilities and sacrificing precious hours of sleep.

Working night shifts at the bar, cleaning tables, serving drinks, and sometimes having to rely on leftover food just to sustain myself, I often feel the weight of exhaustion and despair. But it is in those moments of weakness that I draw strength from my family roots and the unwavering support of my mother who sells fish to make ends meet.

With only four hours of rest each night, I push myself to attend lectures and fulfill my academic obligations, all while battling the fatigue and struggle that comes with working late hours. There are times when giving up seems like the only option, but the thought of making a difference and providing a brighter future for my family propels me forward.

Graduating with a Bachelor Hons in Professional Communication is not just a personal achievement, but a testament to the resilience and determination that have carried me through the toughest of times. I hold onto the hope that success in the industry will open doors to more opportunities and pave the way for a better life for myself and those I hold dear.

As I continue on this arduous journey, I am reminded that perseverance and hard work are the keys to unlocking a brighter tomorrow. With my eyes set on the horizon, I am determined to overcome every obstacle and strive for excellence, knowing that the sacrifices I make today will lead to a brighter and more prosperous future.
