We’re excited to share that we recently took part in the Portuguese webzine H҉I҉N҉T҉F҉ W҉E҉B҉Z҉I҉N҉E҉, diving into who we are, our music, and the story behind Rädslan.
We talk about our background, creative process, inspirations, and what drives us as a band. Huge thanks to everyone supporting us on this journey — it means everything.
Check out the interview and get to know us on a deeper level. 🖤

Interview: Rädslan
By: Miguel Ribeiro //DarlmetalqueenSia
Hintf: Thank you for answering this interview! What were your expectations when all
began?
Rädslan: When we started Rädslan, we knew we had strong material that we wanted to build something from.
It was more of a longing — and we already had material from earlier that we wanted to do more with, to finally release and finish writing. It was one song! Or maybe several, but we were aiming for one specific track ”Mörker och ljus”. Per got the idea of working with material inspired by Joy Division, but in Swedish, something that had long been a dream.
We already knew each other from before, since we first got in touch through another music project in the early 2000s. Back then we created rougher, more expressive music. Now, 17 years later, we feel that we’ve found a more solid form of music- making.
Hintf: Who are Rädslan? How did the bands name came about and whats its history?
Rädslan: We both come from a small town in Sweden called Karlstad, and we moved within the same music circles. We later crossed paths again while both living in the capital, Stockholm, and started playing together. After a while, that constellation drifted in different directions. Daniel moved to northern Sweden and ended up in the city of Umeå, but the longing to return to music and to what we had once created together became too strong. We shared the same musical vein, with melancholy as part of our DNA. So we got back in touch and continued what we had once started. For us, Rädslan does not mean something to be afraid of, but rather an acknowledgment of the inner, constant unease and anxiety that we all carry within us at times. In this sense, Rädslan translates more closely to “The Afraid” in English.
Hintf: What influences your music and lyrics?
Rädslan: Our influences come from all kinds of places. When we met, one thing we had in common was that we listened heavily to music from the 1980s post-punk scene. That’s where we found each other, so that’s definitely one starting point. But we’re both huge music consumers across a very wide range of genres — as long as the feeling and melancholy are there.
Daniel: I’m constantly searching for new musical influences from everywhere. Not least locally in the small town where I live, but also through the endless online flow where you can discover music — both old and new — that you never knew existed. We listen to everything from classic rock, punk, and metal to electronic music and pop. Music comes in phases for me: months-long periods of black metal, and then once I’ve exhausted that, I move on to something completely different. It could just as easily be the Finnish band Flora and Fauna or 90s euro disco. Right now I’m listening a lot to French techno and learning about drum machines and synth modules. Then there’s always some retro music too, old classics like CAN or Captain Beefheart. Lyrically, it’s a mix of personal emotions and experiences, things happening in the world, everyday life, poetry, and the flow that appears while listening to or playing a song — and then anything can emerge. And then there’s a lot of pressure too, forcing lyrics out. I’ve never really seen myself as a strong lyric writer, but sometimes the flow comes naturally — and that’s the best feeling.
Per: Always searching for something interesting for me. New, modern, old, strange but something that touches me and can make me shed a tear.
Hintf: Consider yourself what type of music?
Rädslan: A difficult question, but maybe Rädslan is more like a chord, A minor, though sometimes E minor. Maybe we are like the noice that appears 41 seconds into the song ”I had to much to dream last night” by The Electric Prunes.
Per: If I were stranded on a deserted island and could only choose three artists to listen to, it would perhaps unexpectedly be Moby, Röyksopp, and The Cure. There’s a breadth in what they create that always feels timeless, hopeful, and sad at the same time.
Hintf: How it is the music scene in your country?
Rädslan: There are an enormous number of bands, both locally and on the big stages, in cities all across Sweden — and the quality is very high. If you visit the local scenes, you’ll find a broad mix: rock and jam bands, pop punk, heavy metal, and some prog. There’s also a bit of soul and rave. Right now we’re focusing on singles, but in just over a year we’ve gathered quite a few songs, and we have a whole load of material in the pipeline, so there’s much more to come. We’re also planning to start playing live toward the end of the year. So the future plan is to keep writing music, releasing music, opening up for collaborations, rehearsing, and performing live!
Hintf: Please tell us more about your discography…
Rädslan: We tend to write music in sessions periods driven by a certain feeling, mood, or connected set of ideas. Usually, it results in two to four songs that naturally belong together in some way. From those sessions, a series of singles emerges, each tied to that specific creative period and emotional landscape. Right now, we’ve started working on the material for session three. Between these sessions, we’ve also been exploring and want to continue exploring collaborations, remixes, and projects outside our comfort zone. Same feeling, different form. It’s important for us to challenge ourselves creatively and let new influences reshape the music in unexpected ways.
Hintf: What are your plans for the future?
Rädslan: Right now we’re focusing on singles, but in just over a year we’ve gathered quite a few songs, and we have a whole load of material in the pipeline, so there’s much more to come. We’re also planning to start playing live toward the end of the year. So the future plan is to keep writing music, releasing music, opening up for collaborations, rehearsing, and performing live!
Hintf: Please define Rädslan in only one word…
Rädslan: Bittersweet
Hintf: What you guys know about Portugal?
Daniel: I visited Portugal/Lisbon when I was young, and I remember it as a beautiful city with amazing food. I swam in the Atlantic there, and I still remember that powerful feeling, the heat on the beach and how cold the water was.
Per: I’ve never actually been to Portugal, but I’ve been near the border in Spain. Besides sun, waves, and retired Swedish tax exiles, haha, there’s a huge interest in music in Portugal. I know that metal, goth, and related genres are big there, since so many touring bands always end up playing in Portugal.
Hintf: Would you like to leave some words to your fans in Portugal and to our readers?
Rädslan: It’s so amazing that there are people in Portugal listening to us, completely unbelievable. Hopefully we’ll see you on your local music scene someday. We love you!
