šøš Dragobete ā The Romanian Celebration of Love (February 24th) ššø
Often called the āRomanian Valentineās Day,ā Dragobete is a beautiful traditional holiday rooted in folklore, nature, and the joyful arrival of spring. šæāØ
š® Origin & Meaning
Dragobete is named after a mythological figure, believed to be the son of Baba Dochia, a legendary symbol of winterās end. Dragobete is seen as the guardian of love and protector of natureāespecially birds.
Itās known as āthe day when the birds are betrothedā, as this is the time they begin to choose their mates and build nests. šļø
š¼ Traditions & Customs
⢠Young people would gather spring flowers like snowdrops and crocuses.
⢠The saying āDragobetele sÄrutÄ feteleā (āDragobete kisses the girlsā) comes from the tradition where boys chased the girls they likedāif the feeling was mutual, they shared a public kiss. š
⢠In some regions, stepping on your partnerās foot symbolized who would be āin chargeā in the relationship. š
⢠Girls washed their faces with melted snow for beauty and good luck in love.
⢠It was believed that honoring Dragobete would bring health and happiness for the rest of the year.
š Today
While some old customs have faded, many Romanians still celebrate by offering flowers, spending time outdoors, and embracing love in all its forms. Thereās also a growing interest among young generations to reconnect with this authentic cultural tradition.
Dragobete isnāt just about romanceāitās about renewal, nature, and celebrating love the Romanian way. š·
