The Shopify Trap: Why "Global" doesn’t always mean "Profitable" in Portugal?
If you search for "best e-commerce platform" - Shopify will always be at the top of the list. It’s a brilliant machine for the US and UK markets. It’s easy to use, with tones of tools and I love Shopify! The best CMS for D2C e-Commerce I’ve ever worked with!
But after 20 years in digital marketing and 5 years on the ground here in Portugal, I’ve seen many local D2C brands struggle because they chose a platform that doesn't speak "Portuguese”.
The frictionless checkout myth. Shopify’s biggest selling point is its "one-click" checkout. However, that checkout is designed for Credit Cards and Apple Pay.
The Reality of the Portuguese Market is:
- MB WAY has over 5 million users (nearly half the population).
- Recent data suggests that for local D2C stores, local payment methods (MB WAY & Multibanco) can account for up to 70-80% of total transactions.
- Shopify’s closed ecosystem makes a "seamless" MB WAY integration (where the user just enters their phone number and gets a notif**ation) surprisingly difficult compared to other platforms.
If your customer has to jump through hoops to pay you, they won't. They will simply close the tab.
For Portuguese business owners, choosing a platform is about more than just aesthetics. It’s about logistics, local tax number (NIF, we’ll talk about it later) and customer’s payment habits.
In my upcoming posts, I will be comparing the most popular CMS platforms (like WooCommerce) that actually offer the flexibility a Portuguese brand needs to scale.

Why your Glovo/Bolt dashboard is a “Leaky Bucket” and how to fix it ⤵️
For many restaurants and shops in Portugal, delivery apps feel like a necessary evil. You pay a 30% fee, manage the tablet and wait for orders. I know. I’ve been there.
But are you actually managing your digital storefront?
In a competitive market like Portugal, simply "being there" isn't enough.
If your business isn't optimized for Local SEO - you are invisible to the thousands of customers scrolling through their phones right now in your city.
The "Digital Leaks" I see most often in Portuguese businesses:
🤨Unoptimized Descriptions: Are you using keywords like "Takeaway em Coimbra" or "Melhor Brunch" in your menu tags?
🤨Inventory Friction: Not syncing your shop stock with your app, leading to cancelled orders and lower rankings.
😉Missed Loyalty: Not having a strategy to turn a "one-time app user" into a "loyal direct customer."
With over 20 years of marketing experience and 5 years running a local retail business here in Portugal, I don't just look at the tech - I look at the profit 😍
I help local businesses plug these leaks by optimizing their presence on Glovo, Bolt and own Webshop.
Let's turn those high commissions into a high-growth investment 🙌
